SuperRaccoons Care!

I was touched by a recent blog post by designer Heather Ross.  Her twin sister is in need of some medical help funds and I am glad to help out.  Here is what I made…

Sister softie 006

The SuperRaccoon is off to Santa Cruz to be in a raffle put on by Hart’s Fabrics You Are My Sister Event.  This is my favorite softie to make and it will go to a lucky raffle winner.  It’s a live twitter event, so if you’d like to donate, and cannot be in Santa Cruz, you can still win!  To be completely honest, I would like anything that there is to win.  Such   Great   Raffle   Prizes.  Okay, this event is so fun that I am becoming a Used Car Salesman.  I may have to purchase a ticket.

I hope you are enjoying your weekend.  I’ve certainly got nice weather~

The Raccoon didn’t mind it one bit.

On Saturday I attended Uglycon.  It’s an homage to the Uglydoll and was held at GiantRobot 2 in Los Angeles.  David Horvath and his co-creator Sun-min Kim were both there and a fun time was had by all.   The talent and creativity of all of the Plush Artists involved was a bit overwhelming and I felt honored to be a part of this show.

I had been asked to make a Babo plush, with my own design.  I made three.  I love the Viking Babo by Saint Angel Productions.  His name is Babowski.

uglycon three Babos

The giant one was inspired by Venice Beach and the 70’s and 80’s rollerskating theme that existed there.

wall of babos

This was my second Plush show and I was once again humbled and honored to be part of such a talented group of artists!  Check out the tiny crocheted Babos on the wall.  I like the Mickey Mouse and Yoda amigurimis!  They are by Jake Henzler.  The tiny crocheted Babo on the shelf is by Denise Ferguson of Yummypancake.

cookie juggler

I really loved this Cookie Juggler by House of Darkly.  I thought it was adorable.

oopsnein leeanna butcher

These three pieces are all from Plush Artists that I know of!  The octopus totem pole is by Gretchen Lewis of  Oopisnein.  The cowboy is Buckaroo Babo by Leeanna Butcher, and the kid in the Babo suit is by Octokitty(Denn Rodriguez)

sailor luchador shaggy babo

I am delighted by this particular group of softies.  The sailor Babo and the ice cream are by Scrumptious Delight.  The blue horned Babo is a Fenwick Babo by Michal-Wright Ward.  The Shaggy grey Babo is by Mr. Toast(Dan Goodsell).  The luchador Babo is also by Denn Rodriguez of Octokitty.

cookie bandit

This tiny Babo is called the Cookie Bandit by plushPLAY(Mariangela Tan)  I also do needle-felting and understand the meticulousness of this piece!

This Cookie Thief by Lana Crooks is also quite intricate!  I highly admire her work.

heidi babo 2

The large plush above is Enky Babo by Enky Skulls.  The bottom Babo who is quite tiny is by Heidi Kenny of My Paper Crane, who much like the Uglydoll, has a collection of designs made by Kidrobot called Yummy.  This piece was a fun one and so tiny and intricate!

cotton monster and barbato babo

The monster on the left is called Mondo Monster by Cotton Monster/Jennifer Strunge and the one on the right is the Wooly Babo by Phil Barbato.  I love these two!

This Baborilla by Jerome Lu and Daisy Chow was giant and quite spectacular.  These two were at Uglycon and I had the chance to meet them.  They were quite proud of their piece and rightfully so!

flat bonnie baborilla janiexy

Below Baborilla were some pieces by Flat Bonnie that were adorable and off to the right was a spectacular work by JanieXY entitled Babo James Babo – The Spy Who Loved Cookies.  If you look above the box on the right, there is a piece by Laura Grandlun  and it’s a Grey Gardens Babo.  I love it!

crazy babo

This Babo is a straight jacket is called Crazy for Cookies by Tsai-Fi, and the small chocolate chip Babo is another one by Jake Henzler.

This Babobot by Zooguu(Jen and Brian Gubicza) was quite impressive.  Note the tiny Babo driving the big Babobot.

babobot etc

The plush in the middle with his little orange friend is Obab and Tako by Shawnimals.  Below is Melissa Hsu of Susuten and her adorable cookie hunter Babo and to the right is a Babo bee by Anna Chambers.

And one more photo of the Plush Art has Babo caught stealing from the cookie jar by Horrible Adorables and Babo goes to France by Hibou Designs.  horrible hibou touched up

Besides all of the wonderful artist plush, I was very impressed with the Babo fan plush that was displayed.  Some of these makers have the title “plush artist” in their futures!

Here is the fan art wall.  fan art

There was also a lot of great Babo art at Uglycon!

James Kochalka did some tiny paintings…

And check out all of this great wall art!

I am particularly partial to these hoop embroideries with felt.

These are by Bored Inc.

jeni yang cookie balance

My favorite art was this cut-out piece by Jeni Yang called Cookie Balance.  It’s so awesome, it has a red dot, which means someone has already snatched this piece up!

Uglycon had a great turn out and is still going for a few weeks, so if you get the chance and are in L.A., go to GiantRobot 2 and check it out!

Hello Monday!

My Monday started off pretty great with a sale in my Etsy shop.  When I went down to my post office on Santa Monica Blvd and San Vicente, the post office was unusually quiet.  As I walked around, I noticed that the smells of the aftermath of yesterday’s Pride Parade were not appealing.  I get it, it’s one of the biggest parties of the year, but it smelled of memories of Frosh week in my University days.

I listed two more softies todayin My Shop.  These are two of my favorites.  First there’s Arbuckle the Koala.

And also Melvin the Lion…

They are both wearing corduroy that’s vintage.  I am very much into Koalas right now.  I could make them everyday.

If you are in the L.A. area next weekend(SAturday) there is an UglyCon.  I made some Babos, and so did a bunch of other great Plush Artists.  It’s at GR2(Giant Robot 2) on Sawtelle.

Be there!  Yours in crafting,

June Gloom

We are currently experiencing a pretty grey day here in West Hollywood.  Hopefully it will lift.  You can still get a sunburn, even with all of this cloud coverage.

I have listed two more softies today in MY SHOP .

The first is Hampstead the Owl.

The other softie I listed is Wigston the Hedgehog.  She’s pretty cute and she lives under a hedge, of course!

New listings…

I am going to be listing two new items in my shop, every day for the next week.  Today I have listed Zoe the Koala and Desmond the Cat.

smalls summer 2013 004

Zoe the Koala is a massage therapist.

smalls summer 2013 049

And Desmond is a popular L.A. Reggae D.J.  Here is is story…

Desmond the Cat is a D.J. in Los Angeles. He was born in a back alley, somewhere near Venice Beach by the Canals. He was found and taken in by a local carpenter/reggae D.J. and it was there that his love for Reggae music was born. Desmond adopted the role of D.J. at an early age and has mastered his mixing and is very popular among his peers. He feels that digital music has an inferior sound quality and prefers to play 45inch vinyls when he D.J.’s. He is literally a very Cool Cat!

You can check them out in MY SHOP if you are interested.

Exhausted on a Monday…

I was at Patchwork Craft Fair this weekend in Long Beach.  My husband came to help out, which was nice and extremely appreciated.  It was weird weather as we are experiencing “June Gloom” here in SoCal.  That’s basically a marine layer of cloud that is affected by pressure and sometimes doesn’t go away, such was the case yesterday.  Grey May, June Gloom and in extreme cases – Bummer Summer are all names for this phenomena.

I got to meet a lot of nice people and many were very complimentary about my work, which was great.

patchwork2013 024

I like to keep my display very simple, and let the softies speak for themselves.  The great thing about this is that I am usually one of the first vendors to exit the fair at the end of the day.  I forgot one of my small tables, so the large koala and friend at the front, got to use my chair.

Above is a wide shot.

Thanks to all of the nice people that I met, and all the other talented crafters that were there.

I managed to walk around for short while and I found something that I could not resist.  It’s a t-shirt by Bad Pickle and I just love it!

kale yeah 004

It makes me giggle – a lot.  Well, I’ve got a lot to do today and I leave you with a photo of a swarm of people in my booth at Patchwork.  Well, not a swarm, but a good crowd at least…

Well, I have been busy working on some gallery pieces for the upcoming Uglydoll Uglycon that happens here in Los Angeles on June 15th.  Eric Nakamura, the owner of GiantRobot and GR2 invited me to be a part of it.  Babo was one of the first Uglydolls.  He may have been the first, but I’m not positive about that.  Anyway, my challenge was to create my own interpretation of Babo.  So, he’s pretty much David Horvath’s Babo face, and my teddybearrepublic body, like the same pattern that I use for my softies.  I make three sizes of softies, so I made three sizes of Babo.

The small and medium Babo’s have sneakers and neckties.

For the large Babo, I wanted to do something special, so I gave him rollerskates and a headband.

This is most definitely the biggest softie that I have ever made!  Talk about your giant plush!

I needle-felted the rollerskate wheels so that they would look more authentic.  Monsters are not my usual thing, but I am happy with how they came out.  One of Babo’s trademark accessories is a chocolate chip cookie, so I needle-felted a cooked that each of the Babo’s has in their back left pocket.

I will leave you with one more photo of the giant Babo, so that you can see the back of the rollerskates, which I am most proud of.  It was a lot of hand stitching!

And if you are in the Los Angeles area, come on out to the UglyCon at Giant Robot 2 on June 15th located on Sawtelle to see my art and many other plush artists’ work.
